Hey folks, I'm about to start building a 12x16 deck in my backyard. I've got the basics, but I need a good wrench set for the bolts and lag screws. I'm on a budget but want something reliable. Any recommendations? I've been looking at a few sets online but can't decide between SAE and metric, or if I need both.

Hey Dan! For a deck, you're gonna want a combo wrench set – both standard and metric. Most deck hardware is SAE (like 1/2" and 9/16") but you'll run into metric on some newer brackets. Get a set that has both, or two separate sets. I've been using a Craftsman set for years, they last forever. Also, don't forget a ratcheting wrench set – they save so much time when you're tightening bolts in tight spots. Harbor Freight has some decent cheap ones that work fine for occasional use.

I gotta chime in – if you want quality that'll last, go with Snap-on or Mac. They're pricey, but you'll never need to buy another set. My grandfather passed down his Snap-ons from the 60s and they still work perfectly. But if you're not a pro, maybe check out Tekton or GearWrench – they're more affordable but still decent. And definitely get ratcheting wrenches – you'll thank me when you're tightening those deck bolts.

Hey, budget guy here! Don't listen to Tim – you don't need to spend a fortune. I got a Pittsburgh set from Harbor Freight for like $30 and it's held up for three years of weekend projects. It's got both SAE and metric, and they've never stripped a bolt. Also, get a set of socket wrenches too – they'll come in handy for decking. Just make sure you get a good ratchet that doesn't skip. I've had to replace the ratchet head once, but it's cheap.
