Hey everyone, new here! I'm planning to build a deck in my backyard this spring. I've got a basic tool set but need to get some good wrenches. Should I go for a full set of combination wrenches or maybe just some adjustable ones? Budget is around $150. Any advice?

Welcome! For a deck, you'll mostly need standard wrenches for bolts on brackets and maybe for tightening nuts on joist hangers. I'd recommend grabbing a good set of combination wrenches from 8mm to 19mm, plus a couple of adjustable wrenches for odd sizes. Check out brands like Craftsman or DeWalt – they've got sets that'll last. I've got a 20-year-old set that's still going strong.

Don't overspend! For a one-time deck project, you can get a decent set of combo wrenches at Harbor Freight for like $30. They're not snap-on quality, but they'll do the job. I've used their Pittsburgh brand for years without issues. Save your money for materials – lumber is pricey!

If you're building a deck, you'll also need ratcheting wrenches for speed – trust me. I've built dozens of decks, and having a set of gearwrenches with the open-end and box-end will save you hours. Look for ones with 72-tooth ratchets. Also, don't forget a good torque wrench if you're tightening bolts on anchors – you don't want to over-torque. I've seen too many stripped threads.

One more thing: get a set of impact sockets for your impact driver if you have one. For deck building, you'll often use a driver for lag bolts and such. Also, consider buying wrenches with anti-slip open ends – they grip better on stripped heads. And if you're on a budget, check pawn shops or garage sales – I've found Snap-on sets for a fraction of the cost.

Great advice, thanks everyone! I think I'll go with a mid-range set and pick up a ratcheting wrench set too. Maybe I'll stop by Harbor Freight for a cheap set to start, and upgrade if I need. Appreciate the help!
