DeWalt vs Makita wrenches - which brand holds up better for home projects?

Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my wrench set and can't decide between DeWalt and Makita. I've got a mix of both brands in my collection already, but for wrenches specifically - which do you think has better durability and comfort? I'm leaning toward DeWalt since their ratchets feel smoother to me, but Makita's finish seems more rust-resistant. Any long-term users out there?

Patty, I went with the Makita combo set from Home Depot last year - got it on sale for $89.99. The DeWalt equivalent was like $40 more. For basic DIY stuff (furniture assembly, bike repairs, occasional plumbing), the Makitas have been totally fine. No rust issues, and the grips are comfy enough. Unless you're using them professionally every day, save your cash.

Ooh fun debate! I've actually owned BOTH - DeWalt's 20pc mechanics set and Makita's premium line. Here's my take: DeWalt's chrome finish is slightly thicker, but Makita's open-end wrenches have better angled heads for tight spaces. The DeWalt ratcheting box wrenches have a finer tooth count (72 vs Makita's 60), which matters when you're working in cramped engine bays. For general home use though? You really can't go wrong with either!

Gotta chime in here - DeWalt all the way. I've had my DeWalt combination wrenches for 8 years now, used them on everything from car repairs to building my deck. The etching on the sizes hasn't worn off, and they've survived being dropped in mud more times than I can count. Yeah they cost a bit more upfront, but they're basically indestructible. My brother's Makita set started showing surface rust after 2 years in his garage (and we live in Arizona!).

Thanks all! Bob - good point about the price difference, I'll check current sales. Larry - that tooth count detail is exactly the kind of insight I wanted! Dan - 8 years with no rust issues is impressive, even in dry AZ. Leaning toward DeWalt now, but gonna see if any holiday sales pop up for Makita. Appreciate the real-world experiences!
