Just saw this article about Harley-Davidson no longer including tool kits with their bikes. Is that true? Seems like a shame. I remember when every bike had a little pouch with wrenches and stuff. Now they're all about tech and weight savings, I guess. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I read that too. It's a sign of the times, I guess. Most riders don't do their own wrenching anymore, and those that do probably have a proper tool set. But it's still a tradition. I've used that little kit more than once on the side of the road. Extra points if you know how to fix a primary chain with a screwdriver and a rock.

I'm just an apprentice, but even I know you should never leave home without a basic set, even if it's not OEM. I've got an old Sportster and I carry a compact set I put together myself. Better than any factory kit, honestly. But it's a shame Harley is cutting corners. Next thing you know, they'll be selling the toolkit as an accessory for $200.

Hate to break it to you, Sam, but they probably already do. I mean, who buys a Harley expecting to work on it? Those guys are all about chrome and loud pipes. But for the rest of us, a good set of combination wrenches and a socket set goes a long way. I keep a roll-up pouch under the seat of my old Shovelhead. Never failed me yet.

Good points, fellas. I guess it's all about being prepared, not relying on the factory. I'll bet the article says something like 'modern bikes are more reliable' or 'dealers are everywhere.' But that doesn't help you if you're in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, just thought it was an interesting piece of news. Ride safe.
