Need a torque wrench for deck build - overkill or necessary?

Starting a 12x16 deck next weekend. I've got a basic socket set but I'm wondering if I need a torque wrench for the lag screws and brackets? I've seen some guys just crank them on by feel. What do you think?

Trust me, you want a torque wrench for structural stuff. I've seen decks fail because someone under-tightened or over-tightened the bolts. I've got 3 different ones in my shop, but for a one-time job, you could rent one from the big box store. Set it to the spec on the bracket and you're golden.

Bob's right. But if you're going to buy, get a decent click-type 3/8" drive, like a CDI or Precision Instruments. Don't cheap out on the beam type - they're easy to misread. And make sure you calibrate it every few years. I sent mine in after I dropped it and it was off by 10 ft-lbs!

Torque wrench? For a deck? I just use my impact with the clutch set to '3' and send it. Never had a problem. But I'm also not building to code, lol. If you're the type to measure twice cut once, get one. But don't overthink it - a good cordless impact with adjustable clutch does the job.

I agree with Bob and Rick. Structural connections need accurate torque. I've seen too many wobbly railings and popped screws. Plus, it's cheap insurance. Grab a Tekton or ACDelco off Amazon for under $50 - they're fine for weekend warrior use. Just don't drop it, and always store it at zero to keep the internals happy.
